RUC & Rego Refunds When You Sell Your Car in Nelson (NZ Guide)

Here's something most people miss when they sell or scrap a car in New Zealand: you may be owed money back from NZTA. Two refunds are in play — unused registration (rego), and for diesel vehicles, unused road user charges (RUC). In a region with as many diesel utes as Nelson–Tasman, this can add up.

Two different refunds

• Registration refund: the unexpired portion of the licence (rego) fees you've already paid.
• RUC refund: the unused distance on a road user charges licence — diesel vehicles only, not petrol cars.

The RUC refund — usually the bigger one for a diesel

Diesel vehicles buy road user charges in advance, in distance blocks (commonly per 1,000 km). If you've bought more distance than the vehicle has travelled, that unused distance can be refundable when the vehicle is sold, deregistered, destroyed or exported. Check the distance your RUC licence runs to, read the odometer, and the difference is what you may claim. You generally must apply within a set period, and there's a minimum claim amount.

The registration refund — hand in the plates

When a vehicle's registration is cancelled, NZTA may refund the unexpired licence fees. You generally need to hand in the number plates, and a small non-refundable admin fee applies. If you renewed a 12-month rego shortly before the car died, there's a chunk worth reclaiming.

The one thing to do at pickup

Photograph the odometer the day the vehicle leaves. That reading is the evidence for your RUC claim. Do it before it's towed — once it's gone, you can't go back and check.

How to claim, step by step

1. Note your RUC licence distance and photograph the odometer at pickup.
2. Complete the vehicle's disposal — we handle the NZTA paperwork with you.
3. Hand in the number plates if claiming the rego refund.
4. Apply to NZTA for the RUC refund with your odometer reading and bank details.
