How Much Is Your Scrap Car Worth in Nelson? Here's What You Need to Know

"How much will I actually get?" is the first thing everyone asks. The honest answer is that a scrap car's value comes down to a handful of clear factors — and once you understand them, you can judge any offer (ours included) for yourself.

The factors that decide your car's value

• Make and model. Common vehicles — Toyota, Ford, Nissan, Mazda — have strong parts demand, so they hold value better as end-of-life cars.
• Weight and metal content. Heavier cars, utes and vans contain more recyclable steel, aluminium and copper, so they're worth more.
• Condition and completeness. A complete car — even a dead one — is worth more than a stripped shell. Working parts add real value.
• Current scrap metal prices. Metal is a traded commodity, so payouts move with the market and the NZ dollar.

Typical range in Nelson

Most unwanted and scrap vehicles in the Nelson region fall between $300 and $9,990. A small, stripped, rusted-out non-runner sits at the lower end; a complete, heavier, in-demand ute or 4WD sits much higher. Any quote is confirmed once we've seen the vehicle — no fixed number sight-unseen that gets chipped down later.

How to get the best price

• Don't strip the car first — sell it complete.
• Be upfront about the condition so the quote is accurate.
• Sell sooner rather than later, before rust drops the value further.
• Get more than one quote and compare.
